E.aspera.JPG (34267 bytes)Eucalyptus aspera: is known as the Brittle Range Gum. This species develops into a tall shrub or small tree with a short, often crooked trunk. The persistent bark is grey and fissured. The leaves are opposite, almost cordate (heart-shaped) with short stalks, leathery and dark green on both surfaces. The white flowers are carried in clusters from seven to eleven in number. Flowering occurs in spring. Seeds are shed as the gum nuts mature.

Eucalyptus aspera is widespread in tropical woodlands. It is found in Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia, often growing on sandstone.

The Brittle Range Gum is small enough for cultivation in home gardens, particularly in tropical and inland areas.

The specimen illustrated was growing on sandstone in Boodjamulla National Park in northern Queensland.

The species name refers to the rough feel of the leaves and stalks.

Propagate from seeds.
